A GIANT sheep on a bicycle has done North Yorkshire proud in a competition celebrating the land art that heralded this year's Tour de Yorkshire.

The top spot in the competition, organised by Welcome to Yorkshire, was won by an image of Branwell Brontë riding his bicycle at Haworth Primary School but Masham's sheep art managed to clinch third place for the county.

The land art competition drew almost 4,500 public votes – a record breaking figure - and the Masham artwork proved popular with voters.

It was created by Masham Primary School and Masham Parish Council and measured 1,000m².

The image was displayed in the market place and showed a sheep on a bicycle and as well as featuring a Yorkshire rose and beer barrel to celebrate Masham’s brewing heritage.

Other North Yorkshire entries included a giant yellow jersey in Scarborough and a flamingo at Flamingo Land near Pickering.
