A MAN dedicated to ensuring the welfare of jockeys and stable lads has created a unique opportunity for up-and-coming riders to shine.

Ripon Races is staging the only race in the UK exclusively for apprentice jockeys who are yet to ride a winner.

The race, the first of six to take place on the evening card on Wednesday, June 21, was organised by North Yorkshire racing welfare legend Raye Wilkinson.

Mr Wilkinson, who has been involved in racing for more than 50 years, started out as a social worker in Catterick Garrison but a chance meeting with Middleham trainer Ernie Weymes in 1966 led to his involvement in the sport. By October of that year, Mr Wilkinson worked full-time for the Stable Lads Welfare Trust, and the office in Middleham was opened. Raye has since moved on but still works in Middleham for Mark Johnston Racing as their dedicated welfare officer.

He said: “I am so passionate about helping those working in racing from the ground up and this race is what that is all about, recognising those wonderful moments in a young jockeys career, however long that may be”

Racing begins at 6.50pm with entry from 4.50pm.

Tickets start at £7 on the gates and discounts are available when pre-booked. Children go free when accompanied by an adult.
