A YORKSHIRE Dales parish is holding an open day with self-guided walks between the four churches on July 1, from 10am to 4pm.

The day will be a unique opportunity for visitors to find out more about the four very different churches in the parish of Swaledale with Arkengarthdale.

Visitors are invited to drop into St Andrew’s, Grinton; Holy Trinity, Melbecks in Low Row; St Mary’s, Arkengarthdale and St Mary’s, Muker where they’ll find coffee, tea and home baking.

There will also be people to show them the more interesting parts of the historic buildings and explain about some of the more recent work, such as the new bells at Grinton or the restored windows at Melbecks.

The churches are all within a short drive of each other but the more adventurous can pick up a walk leaflet with map and directions to make their way on foot.

Transport can be arranged back to the starting point if required and the organisers point out that each of the churches is conveniently near a local pub for those making a full day of it.
