A FARMER had to be rescued by a team of firefighters – after his tractor slipped into a deep pit of slurry.

The tractor was buried up to its cab in the slurry during the incident this morning at Hessay near York.

The driver was trapped inside and fire crews from York, Acomb, Ripon, Malton and Tadcaster were scrambled to the scene.

Using chains and farm equipment they were able to drag the tractor to the edge of the pit with the driver inside but without immersing themselves.

Then using more chains and ladders they were able to help the driver reach dry land and safety.

The unfortunate driver was unhurt in the incident – although one fire spokesman commented: “He will certainly have to get undressed outside his house.”

It is believed the tractor rolled into the pit because of a mechanical fault. The incident happened at about 11.40 today, May 19.
