A FILM based on a best-selling book detailing a disastrous military mission is being shown in Catterick Garrison to raise cash for a soldiers' charity.

Empire Cinemas in Catterick Garrison is screening Black Hawk Down on Monday, May 9 at 6.30pm to raise funds for ABF The Soldiers' Charity, which supports soldiers, veterans and their families.

Black Hawk Down, released in 2001 and directed by Ridley Scott, starring Ewan McGregor and Tom Sizemore, is an action drama based on the near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993, when nearly 100 US Army Rangers were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord.

It led to a large and drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen, leading to the destruction of two US Black Hawk helicopters.

Dave Thomas, general manager of Empire Cinemas Catterick, said: “We’re delighted to bring the local community together for a special charity screening of Black Hawk Down.

"We’re proud to be able to support ABF soldiers charity, who are truly at the heart of the Catterick community, and hope to raise a fantastic sum for their causes.”
