A HUGE Jacobean house is in need of more volunteers as its popularity as a tourism attraction grows.

Kiplin Hall, a 400-year-old house, is set in 150 acres of gardens and grounds between Richmond and Northallerton.

It was originally built by George Calvert, Secretary of State to James I and founder of Maryland, USA, and currently has some 110 volunteers in various roles.

However, with its popularity still growing more are needed to help run the house, gardens and tea room.

Dorothy Pearce of Richmond, who has volunteered as a guide and room steward at Kiplin Hall for 14 years, said: “I enjoy meeting people and I enjoy the whole atmosphere of a house that goes back 400 years.

“The way it has been overlaid by the people who have owned and cared for it is fascinating and the impression they have left on its history and how this impression on the house and gardens continues.”
