ONE of the British Army’s most senior generals has praised an artillery battery based in Catterick Garrison for their highly successful operational tour in Afghanistan.
During a medal parade at Richmond Castle today (Wednesday, February 10) Major General Tyrone Urch, General Officer Commanding the UK’s Force Troops Command, told the soldiers that Afghanistan was not yesterday’s war and their commitment to Operation Toral in the country’s capital Kabul had been remarkable as it had begun in March last year.
Speaking to the troops from P Battery (The Dragon Troop) 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, based at Marne Barracks in Catterick Village, the general said he had been truly impressed with their turnout.
“It is a great honour and privilege to be here and the reason I have come is to mark what you have achieved.
“Afghanistan is not yesterday’s war. It is a place of hardship and danger.
“Op Toral passes the test of risk and rigour 100 per cent and you have all completed a highly successful tour.
“You have provided a highly professional commitment to your tasks. Indeed you have really been fine role models not just for you regiment but for the whole of the British Army.”
Maj Gen Urch also praised the support from family and friends - saying it could be difficult for those left behind.
“You do all the worrying and we all know how hard it is to be back here but without your tremendous support we simply could not do it,” he said.
