A POLICE officer who disarmed a man carrying a carving knife after a town centre stabbing attack has been nominated for a bravery accolade.

North Yorkshire PC Richard Baranovsky been alone in a patrol car before receiving an alert that a 27-year-old man had suffered two stab wounds to his leg in an attack near the taxi rank on Station Parade, Harrogate, on July 18 last year.

After being told there was a man near Victoria Shopping Centre chasing people brandishing a large knife, PC Baranovsky drove near the scene and saw people running and the knifeman walking swiftly away from the scene.

After a brief chase, PC Baranovsky caught the man and found he was carrying an eight-inch blade on his waistband.

In January, at York Crown Court, the knifeman was ordered to be detained at a specified centre without limit after admitted wounding and possession of a knife.

Mike Stubbs, of North Yorkshire Police Federation, said PC Baranovsky had showed courage and determination in single-handedly arresting the man.

Mr Stubbs said: "He recognised the risk presented and gave chase, restrained and arrested him and deserves the Police Bravery Award nomination and recognition from it.”
