YOUNG athletes swapped the school grounds for the athletic stadium for their annual sports day.

Students from Richmond School spent the day at the Catterick Athletics Stadium competing for honours on the track and in the field.

Budding athletes tackled a host of disciplines from sprints to middle distance running, javelin to discus, long jump to high jump in a trial of strength, speed and skill.

Year Nine saw notable performances from students including victories for Eddie Lewington in the 100m, Eliza Parker-Hack in the girls’ 1500m, Amy Bushel in the girls’ high jump and 800m and Jake Stephenson in the boys’ 1500m.

Year Eight shared the limelight with winning performances by Eliza Withers in the girls’ 300m and triple jump, Jake King in the boys’ shot putt, Joey Hope in the boys’ 100m and Paige Brown in the girls’ high jump.

Competing for the first time in the school games and taking the honours in Year Seven were Uchenna Anyadiegwu in the boys’ 800m, Nick Chapman in the boys’ shot put, Katie Wood in the girls’ long jump, Abbie Robson in the girls’ javelin and Blaine Tuite in the boys’ 100m.

PE teacher Helen Southgate said: “Sports day provides an ideal opportunity for the year groups to mix in an atmosphere of healthy competition.

“Moving to a proper athletics stadium gives the event a sense of occasion and inspires our students to compete at their highest level.”
