A COMMUNITY pub is set to celebrate its fifth anniversary with a special open day including a tour of the pub, its allotments, orchard, library and shop.

The George and Dragon, in Hudswell, near Richmond, will also be marking National Countryside Week, which promotes the value of the British countryside and the issues it faces.

Residents from Hudswell and further afield are expected to attend the George and Dragon’s event tomorrow (Saturday, July 25) from 2pm.

National Countryside Week is the Prince’s Countryside Fund’s annual awareness week, and is being supported by the Plunkett Foundation, a charity that supports rural communities to set up and run community co-operatives – enterprises that are owned and managed by large numbers of people from within the community.

Martin Booth secretary of Hudswell Community Pub, said: “We’re really looking forward to celebrating the fifth anniversary of saving our pub as a co-operative and creating a new and thriving hub for the village.

“We hope that our current members, as well as people from further afield, can join us in this celebration that includes a special ‘made in Hudswell’ menu.”

James Alcock from the Plunkett Foundation said: “Community co-operatives like the George and Dragon play a vital role in helping improve the lives and livelihoods of people living in rural areas.”
