THE remains of a Roman Villa, discovered during construction of a bypass, will be reburied under the new road, but information about the finds is to be made public.

Archaeologists discovered the villa, dating back to around the third or fourth century and which they say has rare features, along the line of the new £34m Bedale, Aiskew and Leeming Bar bypass. They have been excavating the site for the past five months.

Now North Yorkshire County Council is looking at options to display the artefacts discovered and making the information gleaned available to the public.

A spokesman said they were looking at leaflets, an interpretation board and putting information on the internet.

“Excavation of the villa began in November 2014, and the area of the villa which lay within the road corridor has now been fully investigated and recorded.

“On completion of all fieldwork, the process of post-excavation work will begin, with each category of artefact examined by specialists so that a full report can be produced,” he added.

The council says because construction work on the road is already considerably advanced the villa can’t remain exposed, but they say it will not be damaged by the work and will be covered up as it was found.
