A NORTH Yorkshire bed and breakfast has been named as the best in the world after after receiving top ratings from guests.

Millgate B&B, in Masham, beat competition from around the globe in the 2015 Travellers' Choice awards.

Sue Burrell, who owns Millgate B&B with husband Andrew, said: "We're thrilled to be named the number one B&B in the world.

"The fact that this award stems from our guests' feedback makes it even more special, because the reviews we've received on TripAdvisor have really helped our business thrive."

"We were under strict instructions not to share the news with anyone until TripAdvisor made the announcement at 5am this morning.

"I was all ready to tweet that we'd been voted the best in the world when my iPad pinged at 5.09am to say we'd received a booking and pinged again a few minutes later."

"Since then we haven't stopped but it's just fantastic. We love what we do and wouldn't have it any other way."

The awards were based on millions of reviews left over the past year by holidaymakers on the travel website TripAdvisor.

Lawton Court Hotel, in Llandudno, came first in the World's Top 10 Bargain Hotels category, with reviews praising the owners, staff, food, seafront location, views and cleanliness.

It also received second place in the World's Top 10 Small Hotels and came fourth in the world for service.

James Kay, a TripAdvisor spokesman, said: "These awards recognise the finest hotels across the globe, according to those that really matter - the guests themselves.

"This year is particularly good news for the UK hotel industry, with the UK home to more of the world's best rated properties than other country."

Millgate B&B scooped top place in the World's Top 10 B&Bs. It has received more than 350 excellent reviews on the site, with one reviewer describing it as the "best B&B we have ever been to".

One recent review said: "Wonderful owners who couldn't help us enough, fresh scones on arrival, beautifully decorated, the breakfast was delicious (especially the specials!), perfect location, wonderful experience!! We will definitely be going back again in the future.”
