A NORTH Yorkshire market town was plunged into darkness during rush hour as a major power cut affected more than 3,000 properties.

A Northern Powergrid spokeswoman said the company received the first report of a power cut in Northallerton at 5.15pm this evening (Thursday, December 18) and a total of 3,742 properties were affected.

Within 15 minutes the supply had been returned to all but 500 properties as engineers continued to work on the network. The problem seemed to have been caused by a large voltage network fault which affected four DL postcode areas.
