PRIMARY school children have named all the houses on a development which aims to help families remain in a rural area.

Pupils at Hunton and Arrathorne County Primary School, near Leyburn, were asked to come up with names for the affordable houses and named each one after a flower or a tree type.

The properties, off Wild Hill Lane, are being developed by Broadacres Housing Association in partnership with Richmondshire District Council, and are set to be completed by March.

The houses will be allocated to people with a local connection to Hunton parish.

Headteacher Joanne Grainger said the pupils involvement with the project would continue in the the new year with them building bug houses on the site to help retain the native wildlife.

She said: "The children have been involved in the new houses from the beginning when there was an archaeological dig before the building work started.

“It is lovely that they were involved in the naming of the new houses, which are a part of our community."

Richmondshire District Councillor Robin Scott said: "It's important to involve the whole community in projects like these, for these new homes to be named by local schoolchildren is fantastic."
