THE main A684 road into the Yorkshire Dales remains closed at Aiskew and Bedale as emergency repairs are carried out by Northern Gas.

It’s been closed for four days causing major traffic problems after highway workers discovered a major gas leak during resurfacing work. Northern Gas says it is working round the clock to repair the mains pipe and specialist equipment has had to be brought in.

"The leak already existed when we began our resurfacing work and we reported it as soon as we found it,” said Gareth Dadd, North Yorkshire County Council's executive member for highways.

“We understand the inconvenience this must be causing, but we can only return to our resurfacing programme once British Gas have resolved the problem and it is safe to undertake highways works in the area.”

Diversions have been set up on the B6285 and the A6055. But when the repairs are complete motorists face further chaos as the road will be closed between 7pm and midnight for around a week after it’s repaired while the county council completes resurfacing .
