BAKING enthusiasts at a Help For Heroes recovery centre in Catterick Garrison have contributed towards a fundraising cake sale to benefit centres across the UK.

Phoenix House recovery centre for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans held the bake sale in the garrison Tesco today with the aim of beating last year’s total of £1,200.

The sale is part of Help For Heroes Colossal Cake Sale, a national initiative to get people baking to rasie cash for the charity.

Jill Grainge, communications manager at Phoenix House, said: “The sale went really well – there were lots of Easter shoppers and being a garrison town there is always a lot of support for Help For Heroes, which is fantastic.

“We had hundreds of cakes and biscuits to sell, made by Phoenix House staff members, veterans and personnel who use the centre, family members, and even a group of Women’s Institute ladies from Heighington, who wanted to help but were not able to do a bake sale of their own.

“Blue Apple, the food service provider at Phoenix House also baked for us.”

The Colossal Cake Sale runs from April 19 to May 5, and anyone interested in running their own cake sale can do so by registering online at www.colossalcakesale.org.uk.

Funds from sales will help the charity continue to support to wounded service personnel and veterans, as well as the on-going help available through the four recovery centres at Catterick Garrison, Colchester, Plymouth and Tidworth.
