Former drummer writes film score

A ROCK star-turned-lecturer has taken on a new role - and written a movie score.

Rowan Oliver was once the drummer with Goldfrapp but is now a lecturer in popular music in Scarborough.

He lent his talents to a hard-hitting film starring Juno and X-Men 3 actress Ellen Page.

Mouth to Mouth was actually filmed by director Alison Murray three years ago but premiered in the UK this month after winning plaudits at festivals around the world.

Unusually for the composer the soundtrack is primarily electronic, and was created without his usual drums.

And as the music was the last stage in the film's production, he had only a fortnight to write and produce the entire score.

"It was exciting to work with an emerging director on an edgy new film," he said.

"Once we'd established some common artistic ground the ideas came very quickly.

"I had to tap into the dark side of my creativity to produce a score that would fit with this bleak story."

Mouth to Mouth follows the story of Sherry, played by Page, who joins a travelling cult as they drift between the illegal raves and red-light districts of alternative Europe.

Mr Oliver works for Hull University's School of Arts and New Media in Scarborough and one of the modules he teaches is called "Composing Music for Films and Television."
