North Yorkshire
Queen to visit region's biggest show
THE biggest event in the North's agricultural calendar will have two very special VIP guests this year.
The Queen and by the Duke of Edinburgh will visit the Great Yorkshire Show in July to meet exhibitors and inspect the livestock.
It will be the fourth time the Queen has attended the event and her last visit was during her Silver Jubilee celebrations back in 1977.
Her first visit was 56 years ago in 1952, when she was still Princess Elizabeth and she paid a call again in 1957.
She was also patron of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, which organises the show, for 45 years from 1952 to 1997.
This year's Royal visit is being regarded as particularly significant as the show is this year celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Honorary show director Bill Cowling said: "We are delighted that HM The Queen and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh are visiting the Great Yorkshire Show, particularly during this, our 150th show.
"It is a great honour to welcome Royal visitors to the showground - and
we look forward to the Queen seeing how the Show has developed since
her last trip to Harrogate."
The last Royal visit to the Great Yorkshire Show was in 2006 when the
Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall attended.
The Queen and Prince Phillip will attend on the third and final day of the show - July 10 - which is traditionally regarded as children's day.
This year's landmark show is predicted to be one of the best in the
event's history.
More than 120,000 visitors are expected to visit over the three days and livestock entries are pouring in. The record number of entries was set last year, at 11,789.
The first Great Yorkshire Show was a one-day event in York in August 1838 and it moved around the county until its present sprawling Harrogate showground was bought in 1950.
This year attractions will include, among others, a 30m high Great Yorkshire Show Wheel, five cookery theatres featuring some of the region's top chefs, 150 years of bridal fashion and music from the Black Dyke Band.
