Exemplary students are honoured

A PAIR of teenagers have been honoured with a prestigious and ancient award for their work both at college and in the community.

Staff and students at Northallerton College agreed that the annual Cuthbert Cross accolades should go to Shaun Lane and Sarah Breckon.

The solid silver crosses, which mark the college's close association with Durham Cathedral and St Cuthbert, are presented to students whose conduct enhances the reputation of the school.

They were presented at a special assembly by head teacher Mick Hill and chairman of the governors John Dennis.

Shaun, 17, of Northallerton, was recognised for his work on lighting and sound in college productions, his saxophone accomplishments, his voluntary work at a local nursing home, helping in the Friarage Hospital shop and for his sporting achievements in the college swimming team.

"I didn't expect to win and it feels fantastic to be recognised by your tutors and your peers," said Shaun, who hopes to study medicine at university and eventually work on an air ambulance.

Sarah, 18, of Appleton Wiske, was recognised for her work in the local cancer research charity shop, being student council secretary, organising the leavers ball, completing more than 200 hours of voluntary work and running charity events.

"I feel really proud and really pleased to be awarded this honour," said Sarah, who plans to study economics at university and work in finance.

Mr Hill said: "We don't tend to stand on ceremony too much in this college but this is one important occasion when we do.

"Durham Cathedral was founded where St Cuthbert finally came to rest and it in turn founded a school in Northallerton in 1322 to teach Latin grammar.

"The cathedral presented us with the Cuthbert Cross about 100 years ago and we are delighted to present them to students every year for their exceptional contributions."

Mr Dennis added: "The awards prove that young people realise the value of serving the community in which they live. It teaches them to respect other people, their views and the environment in which we live."
