POTENTIAL sailors who want to find out more about the sport are being given the chance to do just that.
The sailing club at Thornton Steward Reservoir, between Bedale and Leyburn, is holding an open day on Sunday.
Members will be demonstrating the equipment and the skills required to make the most of Yorkshire Water's reservoir in picturesque Wensleydale.
Club members will be doing their best to help visitors take to the water themselves but, as the facilities for guests are limited, it may be dependent on demand.
Experienced sailors will also talk through the do and don'ts of getting started, the likely costs and the facilities offered by the club.
Thornton Steward is not only an ideal location for recreational sailing but also hosts competitions for sailors of all abilities.
"People often see sailing boats out on the water and dream of having a go but never do because they don't know how to get started," said club member Ken Gibson.
"We're hoping our open day will help people overcome those first few obstacles and perhaps encourage one or two to take their first steps into a thoroughly rewarding sport.
"Sailing is something the whole family can enjoy together and we would be delighted to see a few new faces at the club."
