A CABBIE has lost a £10,000 bet with Robbie Savage after wrongly predicting that Newcastle United would qualify for the Champions League.

Toon fan Matty Nolan set up the bet after he gave the Strictly Come Dancing star a lift in August.

He said: “We had a bit of banter in the car.

“I asked him where he was going and he was going to Strictly Come Dancing at the Arena in Newcastle.

"He said ‘I think Newcastle are going to get relegated’.

"And I said ‘I think they’re going to finish top four’."

And Robbie sealed the agreement after speaking on BBC Radio Five Live later the same day.

Speaking on the show, Robbie said: “I’m a man of my word, mate.

“As much as I thought they would never finish there I promise you, if they do, I’ll have to buy you that taxi.”

But sadly for Matty, Newcastle's 3-1 defeat to Everton yesterday saw them finish fifth in the league.

The 41-year-old said: "I thought we were in with a chance.

"I'm really disappointed, but I'm alright really. I haven't lost anything, the money would have been a bonus.

"It's been a brilliant season for Newcastle. They said we would be relegated and we've proved them all wrong.

"Hopefully the future's looking good for Newcastle now, if Mr Ashley decides to spend some money."

Matty said that he hadn't heard from Robbie yet but was looking forward to catching up with him about the match.
