A NEW 20mph traffic scheme is being proposed by Sunderland City Council.

Initially, the council agreed a pilot programme of introducing 20mph zones in 15 areas within the City of Sunderland. Six 20mph zones have been introduced to date.

This proposed 20mph traffic scheme covers another two of the original pilot programme and incorporates Marley Pots into a wider area, together with additional streets agreed with ward members in the Castle, Redhill and Southwick wards and is to be introduced in 2018/2019.

Following the introduction of this scheme, there will be seven further 20mph traffic schemes to introduce to complete the original programme. It is proposed that the remaining 20mph zones will be delivered up to financial years 2020 / 2021.

City council portfolio holder for city services, Councillor Michael Mordey, said: “The council would like to hear the thoughts of the residents and road users on the proposals."

The council will accept consultation returns and comments through www.sunderland.gov.uk/North-20mph until January 8.
