SHOP workers were left shaken after a masked knifeman held them up and stole a quantity of alcohol and a mobile phone.

Police are appealing for information following the incident at Premier Stores in Villette Road, Hendon, Sunderland, shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

A police spokesman said: “A masked man armed with a knife entered the store and threatened staff and stole alcohol and a mobile phone before leaving.

“No one was injured but staff were shaken by the incident.

“Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, is asked to contact police.

“In particular there are believed to have been several men outside the shop at the time of the robbery and police would like to contact them as they may have information which could assist officers.

Following enquiries two people have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.

A 25-year-old man and 44-year-old woman, have both been released under investigation, while inquiries continue.
