EMERGENCY crews have been attacked as they dealt with out-of-control bonfires last night.

Lit fireworks were thrown at firefighters in Tyne and Wear and crews were pelted with stones during separate incidents on Tyneside.

In one instance, at least six rockets were hurled in the direction of firefighters, although there are no reports of any injuries.

Crews from Tyne and Wear Fire Service dealt with more than 400 incidents during Bonfire Night.

A spokesman for the Service said on Twitter: “Crews responding to fires in North Shields and Westerhope have been attacked by youths throwing stones and fireworks.

“When did this become part of celebrating Bonfire Night?”

The spokesman added: “Thanks to the vast majority of people in Tyne and Wear for their attitude, friendliness and responsible behaviour during this bonfire period.”
