A WOMAN has died after being hit by a car.

She was knocked down and fatally injured shortly before 5.30pm on Wednesday.

It happened on Marsden Road in South Shields, around three hours after two motorcyclists were seriously injured in the area.

A spokesperson from Northumbria Police said: “Police received a report of a collision between a car and pedestrian on Marsden Road, South Shields.

“Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene."

It is understood an air ambulance landed at Harton Cemetery but left after around 30 minutes.

The crash was the second serious incident to happen in Marsden on Wednesday after a car and motorbike collided on the Coast Road.

Police, paramedics and two fire engines were called to Marsden Grotto just before 2pm.

A silver Nissan car and a motorbike carrying a man and woman crashed, leaving both bike riders critically injured.

Both casualties were airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle after they were put into induced comas on the roadside.

Anyone in the area at the time with information about either crash can call police on 101.
