A RESTORATION project on an historic landmark is to be given a second wind, to bring it to fruition.

Funding and preparatory work is in place to restore Fulwell Windmill, in Sunderland, to its original Georgian glory.

Tea rooms and community spaces adjoining the mill, off Newcastle Road, Fulwell, are already in operation, while the final phase of conservation construction takes place.

Scaffolding will allow traditional skilled craftsmen and millwrights from specialist building conservation contractor Owlsworth IJP to construct a new cap, fantail and sails, which will be brought to site for installation later in the year.

Millwrights recently met on site with project partners from Beaumont Brown Architects and Historic England to assess progress.

Senior Sunderland city councillor John Kelly said it was “fascinating” to see the craftsmen using centuries-old techniques to restore one of the city’s favourite historic landmark buildings.

On completion, by the end of the year, the mill will be managed by Sunderland North Community Business Centre, which already operates the tea rooms and community spaces.
