A MAN has appeared in court charged with the murder of a primary school teacher who was stabbed to death in her home.

Julie Parkin, 39, was fatally wounded at an address in Kirkwall Close, Sunderland, on Tuesday.

This monring, Adam Parkin, of Kirkwall Close, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court charged with murder and with the attempted murder of a man.

The 35-year-old spoke only to confirm his name and address during the short hearing.

Magistrates referred the case to the city's crown court, where Mr Parkin is due to appear on Monday.

No pleas were entered and Mr Parkin was remanded in custody.

Mother-of-two Mrs Parkin was a teacher at West Boldon Primary School in South Tyneside.

Mrs Parkin’s family said in a statement: “We are all utterly devastated. Her children are devastated.

“It is so tragic and we can’t ever understand why anyone would do this. We would like to thank the school for their support."
