SOME of the biggest names in North-East football are to play at a match in memory of a former non-league player.

Former Newcastle United stars Steve Harper, Steve Howey, Darren Peacock, Keith Gillespie, Jamie McClen, and Paul Robinson will be joined by comedian Gavin Webster and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Danny Posthill in next month’s Pavel Cup.

Last year, friends and supporters of the late Magpies’ goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek staged a memorial match in his honour which raised more than £5,000 for St Oswald’s Hospice.

Following the success of the game, which was watched by a crowd of around 1,000 spectators, another game has been organised in memory of Chris ‘Hitman’ Heron, who played for Felling Leam Rangers and died in 2007.

A Pavel Srnicek squad will go up against Felling FC Old Boys for the Pavel Cup on Sunday, July 9 at Dunston in Gateshead.

As well as the match, there will be food stalls, a bar, animal handling displays, a mobile bowling alley, Riverside Falconry and face painting.

Steve Wraith, Managing Director at Newcastle Legends, said: “Last year was a big success and we are hoping that with the big names we’ve attracted that we can raise another large amount for the hospice.

“Felling was a Sunday team that I managed for 20 years and sadly we lost our striker Chris Heron in tragic circumstances 10 years ago.

“The match will be a fitting tribute to two football legends."

Gates open at noon with a 1pm kick off. Tickets are priced at £3.50 for kids and £8 for adults available from newcastlelegends.com.
