A BURST water main is causing disruption on roads and the Metro rail service in Tyneside.

Roads have been closed and services on the Tyne & Wear Metro cancelled due to flooding.

Another burst main in the Heaton Road area left 1,500 homes in Byker without water. St Lawrence’s Primary School has also been forced to close.

Northumbrian Water said the two bursts were unrelated and apologised for the inconvenience.

Bottled water is being handed out to people at Byker Community Centre on Welbeck Road.

A Northumbrian Water spokesman said: “Bottled water stations are now up and running to support customers in Byker who are without water. As well as at Byker Community Centre, we also have water available at the fire station on Union Road.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience these bursts are causing customers and thank them for their patience and understanding. We will keep people in the affected areas updated throughout the day and customers can check for updates on our twitter @nwater_care.”
