A MAN has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries following a crash on the A19 this afternoon. 

THE southbound carriageway of the A19 was closed for several hours following collision  between two vehicles at North Hylton, Sunderland, at 2.30pm.   The road was closed between the between the A1290 and the A1231.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At around 2.15pn this afternoon, police received a report of a two vehicle collision on the A19 Southbound carriageway at the slip road for the A183.

“Emergency services attended and a man has been taken to hospital with potentially life threatening injuries.”

The injured person was the driver of the van. 

 

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 2.10pm alerting us to an accident on the A19.

"We dispatched two Hazardous Area Response Teams, one ambulance and the Great North Air Ambulance.

"The injured man was transported by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle."

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance Service said: "We were called to the A19 after a collision involving a van and a lorry. "The van driver, believed to be in his late 20s, suffered lower limb injuries and was treated by the GNAAS doctor-led trauma team before being taken to hospital by road, accompanied by the air crew.

"GNAAS worked alongside fire and rescue, ambulance personnel and the police."
