DARLINGTON has the second highest proportion of under-performing secondary schools in the country, according to information published by the Department for Education today.

The information published this morning has found three North-East local authorities in the top ten of most under-performing secondary schools.

The list ranks the local authorities according to the proportion of secondary schools that were found to be under-performing, which is defined as being below the Government's floor standard for 2016.

Darlington was found to be the second worst authority with 43.9 per cent, or three of its seven schools, under-performing. Newcastle were ranked fifth with 30.8 per cent, and Stockton tenth with 27.3 per cent.

From left to right, the list shows: name of local authority; region of England; number of schools; number of under-performing schools; percentage of schools that are under- performing.
