PARLIAMENT is to debate celebrations to mark the forthcoming anniversary of Martin Luther King’s visit to the North-East.

The Westminster Hall debate on Tuesday has been called by Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah to draw attention to celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Dr King’s visit.

In 1967, the famed civil rights activist was awarded an honorary degree by Newcastle University which he accepted in person.

Celebrations to mark the anniversary will be held in Newcastle next year under the banner Freedom City.

The MP said: “Only Martin Luther King could help give me the inspiration to dream I could one day be the Member of Parliament for my home town.

“I hope this debate shows the importance of his legacy and Newcastle’s upcoming Freedom City celebrations.

“I want to hear how the Government will support taking his great legacy forward.
