THE NORTH-EAST’S premier orchestra continues its survey of the concerto works of Beethoven at the weekend.

The next Royal Northern Sinfonia concert in the Beethoven Concerto project will be held at Sage Gateshead at 7.30pm on Saturday (October 29) when musical director Lars Vogt performs the composer's first piano concerto.

The concert, titled German Greats, forms part of RNS’ 16-concert series, which includes performances of all five Beethoven Piano Concertos with Vogt as soloist. He has already performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto along with Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff.

All six concertos form part of a live recording project with the Ondine label, co-produced by Deutschland Funk.

Saturday’s concert, will feature three pieces which define the German Romantic tradition.

As well as Beethoven’s first piano concerto, the repertoire includes Weber’s Der Freischüz Overture and Brahms’ Symphony No 1 – dubbed ‘Beethoven’s 10th’ after its immediate success.

The Beethoven’s Concertos project continues next month with Dancing with Emperors on Friday November 18, with the programme including Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5 ‘Emperor’.

Ticket prices for German Greats range from £12.90 to £37.63. Box office 0191-443-4661.
