A YOUNG woman has died after falling from cliffs on the North-East coast.

The 17-year-old died from her injuries after falling at Marsden Grotto in South Shields, South Tyneside, just before midday on Saturday.

Tynemouth and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigades were paged by Humber Coastguard to reports of a distressed female on the wrong side of the railings on the cliff top.

Captain Dave Bell, of Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade, said: “Police officers and Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue were already on scene with the fire brigade in the process of setting up rope rescue equipment.

“As the casualty was in imminent danger of falling in the region of over 100ft on to the rocks below, members made their way down to the bottom of the cliff to stand by with first aid equipment and a stretcher.

“Unfortunately, the girl fell from the cliff and upon impact suffered multiple major trauma injuries to her head and body and was not breathing.”

Members provided immediate first aid to the girl and administered CPR until she started breathing again.

Paramedics and a doctor provided advanced treatment to stabilise her.

She was then flown to the RVI in Newcastle by an air ambulance which had landed on the beach.

The brigade spokesman said: “Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“Our sympathies and condolences go out to her family at this sad time.”
