HORRIBLE Histories author Terry Deary is returning to the stage this week after treading the boards 65 years ago.

Mr Deary will play the part of Zeus the King of the Greek Gods live on stage for performances of Groovy Greeks at the Sunderland Empire only.

He said: “My voice has been touring with the show based on my Horrible Histories - Groovy Greeks as I pre-recorded the voice of Zeus.

“I made my debut as a performer at the Sunderland Empire about 65 years ago.

"When I saw this year’s tour of Groovy Greeks ends its run at the Empire I begged the producer to let me appear on that stage in person.

“There can’t be many Sunderland City Ambassadors who’ve appeared there as an actor.”

In addition, Mr Deary will have the opportunity to showcase his vocal chords with a song which has been specially-written for Sunderland performances of Groovy Greeks.

He added : “This is the absolute highlight of my life, to go back on the Empire stage and appear in a play based on one of my books.”

Birmingham Stage Company will be at Sunderland Empire until July 16 with their two new Horrible Histories stage shows, Incredible Invaders and Groovy Greeks.

Following their UK tour they will then visit theatres further afield in Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai during 2016.
