POLICE have issued advice to race-goers as thousands of people prepare to descend on a major events of its kind, tomorrow (Saturday, June 25).

Northumbria Police is looking forward to welcoming crowds to Newcastle Race Course for Northumberland Plate Day on Saturday, June 25.

People driving to the event are advised to leave plenty of time for their journey and to be patient as the roads in the area are likely to be busy.

Additional officers will be in the area, working with partners to ensure traffic disruption is kept to a minimum.

Officers also want to remind people to think about their personal safety when out enjoying themselves and not to let the day be ruined by too much alcohol.

People going out after the event are also encouraged to make sure they have made plans to get home safely.

Chief Inspector Stephen Readdie, said: "Plate Day is always a fantastic occasion with a great atmosphere.

“It attracts visitors from near and far and we want to ensure that everything runs smoothly and that people have a great time.

“There will be officers assisting with traffic management throughout the day as well as on patrol around the race course - should anyone require any assistance, they will be happy to help.”
