A MAN is in hospital with serious head injuries after being assaulted on the dance floor of a Newcastle venue.

The 24-year-old man was struck a number of times while on the dance floor of the 02 Academy in Westgate Road and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

The assault is alleged to have happened at about 12.50am on Monday, May 30.

A police spokesperson described the alleged offender as being white, bald with a large build and 6 feet 4 inches tall. He was wearing a blue shirt and left the venue with a small, blond woman with waist length hair, a short skirt and top and Roman style sandals.

Detective Inspector Denise Cark said: "We're appealing for help from the public to identify and locate this offender.

"We also want to hear from anyone who witnessed the attack. The O2 was very busy and there will have been a number of people who will have seen what happened and we're asking them to come forward and contact the police.

"This is a serious assault and we need to find the offender quickly.”

Officers are checking CCTV and are also asking for any taxi drivers who may have picked this man up to contact them.
