LONG standing North-East charity Nepacs is seeking new volunteers to provide support to prisoners and their families.

The volunteers will work with the charity’s new family and parenting service. They will undertake visits to those in the last three months of their sentence and offer support, information and advice. Other functions include providing listening support to family members.

Nepacs says prisoners who receive such help are much less likely to reoffend when do they leave prison.

Jill Openshaw, family and parenting worker for Nepacs, said: “This new service plays an important role in nurturing family ties, which we recognise as important in the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and offenders.

“Our volunteers will be able to make a real difference to the lives of offenders, their families and local communities.”

Experience of providing support to families would be beneficial. References and security clearance will be required.
