A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after falling from the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland in the early hours of this morning.
The emergency services were called at 4.10am to a report of a man on the wrong side of the railings.
Police officers began to engage with the man to try and bring him back to safety.
However, at around 4.45am the man fell from the railings into the water where he sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.
Coastguard officers helped to reach him, and he was taken to hospital by paramedics where his condition is described as critical.
Northumbria Police said anyone who witnessed the incident should call police on 101 quoting reference 199 14/05/16.
