THE RSPCA is appealing for information after an elderly dog was found suffering and alone in a park on Wearside.

The female Jack Russell terrier type dog, thought to be around 15-years-old, was emaciated, with long overgrown nails and teeth so bad she required emergency dental treatment.

She was near Balmoral Crescent, Houghton-le-Spring at about 5pm on Thursday April 21.

RSPCA inspector Kaye Smith said: “The poor little girl may be old but there is no excuse for her condition.

“She was in a terrible state and vets have confirmed she was suffering.

“All but two of her teeth have had to be removed, they were in such a mess.”

She was wearing a pink collar with a tag and the name ‘Jewel’ inscribed on it. The tag also had a telephone number on it but it would seem mobile has been recycled.

“The man who answered when I called told me that he sometimes receives calls for a Miss Taylor so this might mean something to someone,” said Insp Smith.

“We want to hear from anyone who recognises Jewel, and knows who her owner is, to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information should call the RSPCA inspector appeal line 0300 123 8018 and ask to leave a message for Insp Smith.

Jewel is now in the care of an RSPCA inspector, who is fostering her whilst our investigation continues.
