POLICE have confirmed the body found in the River Tyne on Wednesday was that of missing North-East woman Sally Allan.

Northumbria Police said their thoughts continue to be with the family at this difficult time and a report has been prepared for the coroner so an inquest can be held.

The 59-year-old grandmother has been missing since the early hours Boxing Day when she went missing from the home she shared with her husband, Gordon, in Ponteland, Northumberland.

She was seen on CCTV walking along the River Tyne, sparking fears she may have gone into the water.

A body was near to the riverside in Jarrow at 1pm on Wednesday and tests have proved it was her.

A collection organised by her family has raised over £15,000 for the national mental health charity Mind.
