GROUPS from across the North-East are to showcase projects they have been involved in to explore the First World War.

More than 20 groups are expected to attend the event at Newcastle’s Discovery Museum tomorrow (Tuesday November 17) which is being hosted by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.

The event, called ‘Sharing the North East at War: 1914-1918’ will also provide help and funding advice for those who wish to start their own projects and is free to drop-in.

Visitors will be able to see first-hand the stories and memories the projects have uncovered. There will also be a series of interactive presentations, films, archive tours and costume workshops.

One project, from Stockton, Teesside, saw young people working with the local council youth service to reconstruct a First World War trench and create a series of graphic novels about the town during the conflict.

Many of the projects have been made possible by National Lottery players through grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Four million pounds is available through HLF’s First World War: then and now programme and groups across the UK are being encouraged to apply now for projects marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.
