A MAN has been charged with attempting to murder a police officer after an incident in Newcastle.

At 6:24am on Thursday an officer responded to a report of an assault on a woman in the city's East Denton.

When he arrived at the scene the offender ran off and the officer gave chase.

He eventually caught the man on the footbridge over the A1 and while in the process of making the arrest the man tried to push the officer over the side of the bridge onto the motorway below.

Northumbria Police said: "Thankfully, the officer was able to safely detain the man and he was arrested."

The 28-year-old was later charged with attempt murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer and assault ABH.

He will appear at Newcastle Magistrates' Court today.
