A MOTORCYCLIST who crashed during a police pursuit has died of his injuries.
The biker was taken to hospital after being injured in the crash in the Tyne Tunnel in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Police confirmed this morning (Thursday, October 1) that he has since died.
The rider, who is yet to be named, overtook a police car travelling north through the tunnel at around 1.45am, then failed to stop for officers before crashing into a barrier.
The incident has since been referred to the watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
“Enquiries are ongoing by police and we are awaiting a decision by the IPCC as to who will lead the investigation”.
