A HOSPITAL has become the first in the North-East to offer patients and visitors free Wi-Fi internet access both in wards and public areas of the buildings.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Gateshead, will now allow people to connect to the internet free of charge.

The hospital says it will allow people to stay in connected with family and friends at what can often be an anxious time.

Director of nursing at Queen Elizabeth hospital Hilary Lloyd said: “Staying in hospital can be an anxious, stressful and tiresome experience for patients so if we can help provide a way in keeping in touch with friends, loved ones and support group while they recover it could be a real boost for everyone.’’

Chief executive Ian Renwick added: “I think this is an important step in providing free access to a key service.

“The web is now a significant part of all our lives and by providing it to people visiting the hospital it helps remove some of the stress”.
