A CAR chase that ended in a collision in which a teenager was injured, is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPC).

Three people were arrested following the incident, after a Vauxhall Astra struck a tree in Gateshead.

But a 17-year-old male in the car suffered injuries and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

He remained in hospital today (Sunday September 26), although his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The pursuit began at about 11pm on Friday (September 25) when the red Astra failed to stop for patrol car officers.

As a result of the chase the vehicle collided with a tree, just off Sundrew Road, in the Beacon Lough area.

Males, aged 20 and 17, and an18-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and theft of a motor vehicle.

They have since been bailed pending further enquiries.

Due to the police involvement in the incident the case was referred to the IPCC.
