A CATHEDRAL service is to take place to celebrate The Queen’s record-breaking reign.

St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle will hold an Evensong service on Wednesday, September 9 at 5.30pm to mark the day Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II becomes Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

The service will be attended by the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear, Susan Winfield OBE, and will include anthems composed for her Majesty’s Coronation in June 1953.

Dean of Newcastle, Very Revd Christopher Dalliston, said: “This is a truly wonderful occasion and I think it is important that we celebrate it here in the North East.”

The day marks the point at which The Queen eclipses the record on 63 years and 213 days on the throne, set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.

Meanwhile, a commemorative coin depicting the Queen through her reign has been unveiled to mark the occasion.

The Royal Mint has designed the £20 fine silver face value coin depicting the Queen's journey through the five portraits that have appeared of her on UK coins.

Designed by Stephen Taylor, it shows the Queen all the way from her coronation to now.
