A 15-YEAR-OLD girl is critically ill in hospital after a collision with a car last night.

She was struck by a a Vauxhall Mokka while crossing the southbound carriageway of the A167 at Cowgate, Newcastle, at the back of Ladbrokes and Domino's Pizza.

The teenager was taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle with serious injuries.

Northumbria Police this afternoon released a statement describing her condition as critical but stable, and said her injuries are no longer believed to be life threatening.

The Central Motorway East was closed in both directions between Cowgate Roundabout and Claremont Road for three and a half hours while the scene of the collision was investigated by officers.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 ext 69191 quoting log number 1252 of 21/08/15
