POLICE say two opposing demonstrations passed off peacefully.
The far right English Defence League (EDL) held a protest in North Shields, North Tyneside on Saturday afternoon (August 1).
Supporters marched from the Garricks Head pub to Northumberland Park, where there were speeches.
A counter demonstration was organised by Unite Against Fascism, with a march from North Shields Courts also ending at Northumberland Park.
Extra police were sent into the area but afterwards Northumbria Police said both passed smoothly without any serious incidents.
Officers praised the local community for their patience and co-operation during the protests.
Superintendent Dave Felton said: “Both events passed smoothly without any serious incident and disruption was kept to a minimum.
“I would like to thank the local community in North Shields and those who have come into the town today to visit shops, pubs and other attractions in the area for their patience and co-operation during these events.”
