A MAN has been arrested after he jumped from the Millennium Bridge in Gateshead this evening (Sunday, July 19).
Northumbria Police were called to bridge just before 6.20pm after receiving a report of a man causing a disturbance.
Officers arrived to find the man armed with a metal bar on the wrong side of the railings.
Attempts were made to negotiate with the man but he jumped into the River Tyne.
Police on board a fire boat located the man and he was checked over by paramedics.
At 9.20pm Northumbria Police released the following statement: “This is an update regarding the man rescued from the River Tyne. Police have arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of affray. Police received a report of a man causing a disturbance on the Millennium Bridge, Gateshead, before entering the water.”
